Beginning of Hope

A concept for a green, self-sufficient village that rethinks shelter for displaced Syrian families: clean energy, water conservation, services and local livelihoods in one planned community.

EPISA launched Beginning of Hope to show how shelters for displaced Syrians should be built, and to highlight the gaps and mistakes in current shelter building. The team studied housing, living requirements and the social services needed to improve quality of life, and compiled the research into this project.

The design is a one-of-a-kind green village: environmentally clean, and providing sustainable financial support to its residents.

What the project aims for

  • Sustainable development within the village through solar energy and water conservation, using building roofs, commercial areas and green spaces.
  • Care for nature and green space, and carbon reduction: a carbon-neutral village running on clean energy.
  • Dignified, developed and clean housing for 6,000 people.
  • Services planned from the start: a service and commercial center, a school, a place of worship, water and sanitation, an electricity project, and a sports field and public park.
  • Families that are self-sufficient and earn income from the village’s sustainable economic activities, with new job opportunities for citizens.
  • A model that other organizations can follow in housing projects for affected Syrians, and that can be repeated in other regions of Syria.
